In our Half-Life 2 review a few weeks ago, one of our few complaints with Valve's latest FPS was that it didn't ship with any multiplayer support outside of Counter-Strike: Source. We've been enjoying it, to be sure, but what we were really jonesing for was a map or two where we could use the gravity gun and the game's advanced physics to fling barrels at each other.
Lo and behold, that's exactly what we got Tuesday night as Valve did a surprise release of Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and the Half-Life 2 Source SDK. The update, released via Valve's Steam service, includes two maps: "Lockdown," based on one of the Nova Prospekt prison levels, and "Overwatch," an outdoor level based on the "Follow Freeman" chapter late in the game.
Downloading the update was fairly straightforward. Once we'd restarted Steam, the update automatically kicked in, which took about 15 minutes to set up. We've seen some reports of people having issues getting things up and running (check this thread on PlanetHalfLife), but thankfully, it went smoothly for us.
